Vastu Shastra is an ancient doctrine which consists of precepts born out of a traditional view on how the laws of nature affect human dwellings. The designs are based on directional alignments. It used to be applied in Hindu architecture, especially for Hindu temples, and covers other domains, including vehicles, vessels, furniture, sculpture, paintings etc. The foundation of Vastu is traditionally ascribed to the sage Maamuni Mayan in South India and Vishvakarman in North India.

Vastu is the science of direction that combines all the five elements of nature and balances them with man and materials. It is all about the interaction of various forms of best effect on a living person. It aims to create a subtle conducive atmosphere in a structure in which we can bring the best in ourselves, thereby paving the way for enhanced health, wealth, prosperity and happiness in an enlightened environment. Like any other science, Vastu is universal, rational, practical and utilitarian. It is not a religion but a science.

The principle laid down in Vastu Shastra were formulated keeping in view, the cosmic influence of the Sun, its light and heat, solar energy, directions of wind, the moon position, the earth's magnetic field and the influence of cosmos on our planet. The system is an admixture of science of directions, astronomy and astrology.

The five elements

Out of the nine planets, our planet has life because of the presence of these five elements. The world comprises of five basic elements, also known as the Paanchbhootas. They are Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Space. Earth and Water have limited and localized availability for the human habitat and growth.

According to Vastu Shastra, the world comprises five basic elements known as the pancha maha bhoota. Out of the eight planets, ours has life because of the presence and balance of these five elements. The five elements are as follows.

EARTH (Bhumi) - Earth, the third planet in order from the sun, is a big magnet with North and South poles as centers of attractions. Its magnetic field and gravitational force has considerable effects on everything on the Earth, living and non-living.

WATER (Jala) - This is represented by rain, river, sea and is in the form of liquid, solid (ice) and gas (steam, cloud). It forms part of every plant and animal. Our blood is mostly water.

AIR (Vayu) - As a life supporting element, air is a very powerful life source. Human physical comfort values are directly and sensitively dependent on correct humidity, air flow, temperature of air, air pressure, air composition and its content.

FIRE (Agni) - Represents light and heat which account for day, night, the seasons, energy, enthusiasm, passion and vigour.

SPACE (Akasha) - The akasha provides shelter to all the above elements. It is also considered the primary conductor of all energy sources within the universal context – physical energies such as sound and light, social energies such as psychological and emotional, and cognitive energies such as intellect and intuition.

Q: Why Practice Vastu?

A: If the five elements are balanced and all obstructions to life-supporting energy are removed you will receive the maximum life enhancing energy and support of nature, which will assist you in unfolding your full potential. You will have more opportunities and your thinking will be clear to act on them in the proper time.

Q: When should we practice Vastu?

A: It is best to practice Vastu when purchasing or renting an office, house, apartment or lot and when designing a home. You can also use Vastu for any existing structure or when you are facing problems at home or work.

Q: What is the difference between Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui?

A: They both aim at removing obstructions so that energy can flow freely, which creates environmental harmony. The primary difference is that part of Feng Shui's theory is based on a regional concern that sandstorms, blowing from the north, made a northern entrance to the home unacceptable, whereas Vastu favors entrances on the north and east. Vastu is based on science. Feng Shui is based on local geographic considerations and traditions. They both utilize the five elements; however, Vastu uses earth, water, fire, air and space; whereas Feng Shui replaces earth and space with wood and metal. We have found Vastu Shastra to be more effective for our personal use and for the benefit of our clients.

Q: When will I notice the benefits of Vastu?

A: When the elements are balanced in your environment, opportunities will come. It is up to you to utilize these opportunities. You may notice some improvements right away; others may take up to a year.

Q: Are the principles of Vastu applicable in different geographical areas around the world?

A: Even where there is a limited amount of sunshine, the answer is yes. The basic principles of balancing the five elements apply throughout the world. By using the principles of this science, buildings can be designed to harmonize with the different climatic conditions of each region.

Q: Is it possible to achieve perfect balance?

A: It is very difficult to achieve perfect balance; however it is said that if your merits are more than your demerits, you have achieved good Vastu.

Q: Can I benefit from using Vastu Shastra without demolishing my home and starting over?

A: Yes. These are a few very easy adjustments you can make. You can sleep in the southwest area of your house with your head to the south. You can place heavier furniture to the south and west. Keep the center, north and east areas of your home open and free of clutter. You can also place a fountain in the northeast and a light in the southeast. Just using these basic suggestions can have positive benefits in your life.

Q: What is the scientific basis for having a lot slope down to the north and the east?

A: A lower level in the northeast allows the positive magnetic energy coming from the north and the positive solar energy (ultraviolet rays) coming from the east to enter your property and house. This downward slope to the northeast allows water to flow there and absorb the positive energies. Then this positive magnetic energy can flow unobstructed to the southwest where it is deposited. The higher level in the south and west protects you from harmful gamma and infrared rays.

Vastu purusha mandala is followed by all experts with due respect and dignity in different design structures including temple, hospital, house, office, factory etc.
